Guard Eric Steinbach has decided to retire, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin announced Wednesday. Steinbach missed the 2011 season with a back injury, was subsequently released by the Browns and signed with the Dolphins last month to compete for a reserve role, but has been bothered by a lingering knee injury. Philbin's relationship with Steinbach dates back to when Philbin was Iowa's line coach and Steinbach was a tight end recruit moved to guard. "It was tough," Philbin said of the retirement conversation with Steinbach. "He’s had an exceptional career in the National Football League as an eight-year starter and he’s got a wonderful young family. "He made a real valiant... he really wanted to prove to himself to see if he could come back and physically be the player that he once was, but we’ll be fine."
