Done and Done

I have been a Rex Grossman fan since he came into the league. I thought he was going to be a great "sleeper" draft pick and someone that could change the way we looked at the Monsters of the Midway. I was wrong. It is only one game into the season but the fact of the matter is that all of the other QB's that are in the same position as Rex (as far as age, experience and talent go) are progressing. For example Eli Manning and Tony Romo both had monster games last night. Neither of them played perfect, but they threw for a ton of yards and played a competative game until the end. This year we can also look foward to seeing Matt Leinart and Vince Young as they pass up Rex as young outstanding QB's in the NFL, and Bears fans will be left with Brian Griese once Lovie has had enough. Game one is in the books and I still have a positive outlook for the Bears season. Another NFC North championship should be around the corner. But until we can figure out how to throw the ball down field without holding our breath, the Bears will never win the SuperBowl. PS - Please do not blame this game on Cedric Benson. I would put money on the Bears rushing game being 100% better if the passing game wasn't a joke. Obvously this can work both ways but I haven't seen enough of Benson to write him off just yet. Hopefully I am singing a different tune next week after the Bears take on a struggling Kansas City team. But until then I'm as bitter as I can get.

  • As much as I understand your frustration with Grossman, Cedric Benson is going to be the Bears undoing. He's not going to get through the season healthy and even if he does, he won't be nearly as productive as TJ.
  • I like Grossman and still believe that he's going to be a good (not great) NFL quarterback. I do disagree with you on the basis of Cedric Benson. If you cannot solidify a decent running game, you cannot be threat throwing the football. By averaging 3.5-4 yards a carry, you force the secondary to sit closer to the line of scrimmage and scheme run over pass. If not, the secondary can sit in a cover/zone scheme which complicates the passing game even more. Just look at San Diego, LT was stopped and the Chargers had about the same issues throwing the football the Bears did.

Unfortunately, the biggest offensive problem with the Bears is play calling.
  • While I value both of the viewpoints given, I think that Cedric Benson's lack of progress has a lot to do with the offensive line production. He is not a slasher like TJ was and this is something that he needs to work on, but he is someone that can hit a hole hard and push for 4-5 yards a carry. The problem is that he isn't getting a hole to start with. He is forced to try and run over his own lineman and then the people beyond them. Also if you look at him last year, he gets stronger as the year moves on. I think I just finally got tired of making excuses for Rex. It's time for him to produce. No more experience talk. It's now or never and this week vs. Kansas City is a great time to step it up.
