Donte Whitner enjoyed his finest NFL season in 2011. The veteran safety earned his first Pro Bowl nod and finally reached the playoffs with the NFC West champion 49ers after toiling in Buffalo for the first five years of his career. Yet he's obviously still disappointed after the Niners were slayed in overtime of the NFC Championship Game by the eventual Super Bowl champion Giants. Asked on NFL Network's NFL Total Access on Tuesday night if he watched Super Bowl XLVI, Whitner responded: "Bits and pieces of it. I was probably watching reality TV or something. I didn't really want to watch it because, you know, we felt like we outplayed the Giants. We felt like that was our trophy to lose. We came up short. We felt like we had an opportunity to beat the Giants. We felt like we matched up well with the Patriots, and the Giants go home with the trophy. ... I feel like we would have beat the Patriots."

Report: 49ers expected to franchise Goldson, sign Rogers & Smith

According to Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, the San Francisco 49ers will likely place the franchise tag on safety Dashon Goldson since the salary for a safety is much lower then quarterback or cornerback under the tag. Speaking of the 49ers and their free agent quarterback Alex Smith and cornerback Carlos Rogers, they’ll likely be signed to long-term deals to ensure they don’t...

49ers mum on Smith's contract status

The San Francisco 49ers are on record that they'd prefer not to use the franchise tag this offseason, but they also have a quarterback who could be a free agent. And Alex Smith seemed to find himself and his niche last season. GM Trent Baalke said San Francisco remains committed to re-signing Smith but offered no details on where things stand. "We're working hard...

Ahmad Brooks Looking for 8 Mil a Year?

I recently came across this tweet from Matt Barrows. A fan asked Matt how much leverage Brooks has considering lack of depth at OLB position. This is what Matt had to say on Twitter. Tom Brady carries the legacy of coach Tom “The Mechanic” Martinez

Tom Martinez could not have picked a greater legacy holder for his professional career than Tom Brady. Martinez passed away Tuesday night, on his birthday, but he’ll always be remembered as the guy who could fix Brady when the star QB needed tweaking. Throughout the years, Martinez’s name would surface and float around like fireflies lighting up a football conversation...

Jim Harbaugh was Indiana basketball’s team manager (Pictures, Video)

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is going to be in Indianapolis for the NFL combine this week, so it only made sense Wednesday night for him to make the hour-long drive south to Bloomington to see his brother-in-law Tom Crean’s Indiana Hoosiers take on North Carolina Central. But what Harbaugh was seen doing during the game might make less sense. Fans in attendance probably...

Burning question: does Alex Smith have enough weapons in San Francisco?

Alex Smith has worn a San Francisco 49ers uniform for seven years now. 2011 marks the first time his team has finished above 18th in the league in points. And while he was called upon to manage games for most of the regular season, the playoffs provided a revelation.  Alex Smith, a former bust who has had to struggle his way to mediocrity, outgunned the mighty Drew Brees...

49ers add Pontbriand, 3rd long snapper on roster

Get ready to be wowed by Green

I'll never forget Vernon Davis' performance at the 2006 NFL Combine. Considered a late first-round, early second-round prospect when he arrived in Indianapolis that week, Davis took to the RCA Dome carpet like some modern-day Hercules. The chiseled Davis dominated the tight end drills like no player ever had before. The 40? He ran it in 4.38 seconds, the fastest time by...

49ers GM Trent Baalke on Alex Smith, other free agents: 'We want to keep our guys in place'

49ers general manager says he probably won't view tape of 49ers loss to New York Giants because it makes more sense to focus on the future.
