San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner has taken the next step in his pursuit to change his last name from Whitner to "Hitner."
The Ohio native has expressed an intent to change his name ever since the National Football League fined him $21,000 for an illegal hit earlier this season.
On Tuesday, Whitner sent his attorney Larry Zukerman to file the official paperwork at Probate Court of Cuyahoga County.
In the application, Whitner wrote that he wants to make the change because it will be beneficial to his professional football career, as well as other business ventures.
The entire process typically takes about six weeks before the name change is approved by a judge. So, it might not be until after Thanksgiving before we see Whitner's name change take effect.
