Even though there’s reportedly a $10 million gap between the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees in terms of guaranteed money, he sounded optimistic during Wednesday night’s ESPY awards show.

“I’m an eternal optimist, so I’m still very confident a deal will get done by Monday,” Brees said.

“I think I’ve been around this league long enough to understand how this works at times,” Brees said. “In a lot of cases, it does go down to the wire, and you need a stopping point in order to bring everyone together and make sure it can get done.

“That stopping point is Monday, so let’s hope we get something done by then.”

Brees and the Saints will have until Monday at 4pm est to get a new deal done.  If they can’t agree on something, Brees will have to play under the franchise tag for the 2012 season.
