There’s no denying how talented the LSU defense was last year. One of the big contributors to that unit was defensive tackle Michael Brockers.

Brockers is a large prospect at 6-5, 322 pounds but possesses great athleticism for a player of his size. He’s built from the ground up with very strong legs that allow him to hold his ground even when being double-teamed.

The most interesting thing to me about Brockers is measuring his ceiling. He didn’t play that much in his 2010 season but was a standout in 2011 when he started all 14 games. There is a lot of talent there, but he only did it for one season.

Despite not having a long tenure, his body of work in 2011 was quite impressive. He was an anchor in the middle for the Tigers and commanded a ton of double-teams. Check out some footage of Brockers from the National Championship this year.

You can see the respect Alabama had for Brockers coming into the game as he rarely saw one-on-one matchups along the line. However, he maintains his ground very well when taking on multiple blockers while keeping his eyes in the backfield.

When using a bull rush technique, he can get a solid push with the power he has in his lower body and also has the ability to create separation using his long arms. Brockers didn’t have a ton of success in the pass rush last year, recording just two sacks last season but that isn’t something that worries me in the Eagles system.

The more impressive thing to me is the way Brockers plays the run. He seems to be able to read the run well and get off blocks at the line to make plays. In 2011, he was third on the team with 10 tackles for loss.

The biggest knock on Brockers is his lack of experience and that’s part of the reason I find him to be so intriguing. He has a lot of room to grow and I think the Eagles could be a good fit for him as he’d be able to learn from guys like Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson. I think Brockers would fit nicely into the rotation on the line and wouldn’t have the pressure to be a starter out of the gate.

As far as his draft projection, Brockers has been placed all over the board. He has first round talent but his lack of experience may cause teams to value other defensive tackles with more of a track record over him.

If the Eagles do end up staying at the 15th overall selection and choose Brockers, I don’t think it would be a reach at all. I think he would fit well in Philadelphia.
