Paul Domowitch of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes that Eagles face some decision regarding cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie during the offseason. When they acquired both of them a few seasons ago, it was assumed that they would both be corner stones for their defense, but neither player has lived up to their expectations. Domowitch writes that it’s no longer a given that Rodgers-Cromartie will be re-signed during in the coming months. Effort and consistency have both been big issues for him in recent years, so it’s not as though you can count on him to play even better once he’s been locked up to a multi-year extension. As for Asomugha, Domowitch believes the team will approach him about renegotiating his $15.3 million salary for the 2013 season. Domowitch even goes as far to suggest that Philadelphia could always release him if he’s unwilling to drop his salary to something in the range of $5 – $6 million. If the Eagles were to release the 32 year old corner, they would still have to pay him the $4 million guaranteed that’s remaining on his deal. Either way, the Eagles are actually in a tough spot regarding their cornerback positions. It was assumed that these players would have solidified the position for a number of years, but they now have to wonder whether or not they’re even worth bringing back. Philadelphia doesn’t have adequate replacements on their roster even after they drafted Brandon Boykin last year, so the question becomes; Do you commit a lot cash to the players you already have or do you cut them lose and look for younger replacements?
