Under new head coach Chip Kelly, running back LeSean McCoy will split carries with Bryce Brown in a two-back system (Credit: Jeffrey G. Pittenger-US PRESSWIRE – Presswire) During Andy Reid’s thirteen years in Philadelphia, the team was predominately ran a one running back system. With running backs like LeSean McCoy, Duce Staley and Brian Westbrook, Andy Reid did not need to rely on multiple running backs. During Reid’s tenure in Philadelphia, the team normally gave most of the carries to one player. Under new head coach Chip Kelly, the team will look to feature a two running back system. According to Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com, the team’s offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will use both LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown as the featured back. “I think it’s important that you use more than one running back,” Shurmur said. “It’s a long season, and a guy can run out of gas quickly. “If you have guys who are different, you can use them in different ways, and you try to play to their strengths. I think that’s important.” Last season both McCoy and Brown carried the ball over 100 times and while Shurmur did not mention if it would be a 50/50 split, expect both players to break 100 carries in 2013. During his four years at the University of Oregon, Chip Kelly had at least two running backs with at least 90 carries all four years. If Kelly and Shurmur hope to run an uptempo offense, trying to keep a running back fresh may be a great idea. Or, they will downplay one of the team’s greatest strengths in LeSean McCoy and end up hurting the team.
