The Eagles, like the rest of the NFL trimmed their roster to 53 players yesterday. There weren’t too many surprises, but a couple of names have been around town for a while and will now be looking for new homes. Another player found a new home in Philly.

Mike Kafka, who was named the #2 QB on the team at the start of OTAs lost his job.  Nick Foles, the rookie out of Arizona won the backup job, and as I expected, veteran Trent Edwards locked up the #3 job.

The Eagles cut a total of 23 players yesterday and added 1. The player added was veteran safety David Sims whom the Eagles acquired from the Cleveland Browns for a conditional draft pick. To make room for Sims, the Eagles waived Guard Julian Vandervelde who’s biggest contribution to the team was singing the National Anthem at Flight Night last week.

There was a need to add another safety to the team because the Eagles cut OJ Atogwe, who battled injury for much of his brief tenure with the team. In addition, DE Darryl Tapp agreed to restructure his contract with the Eagles in order to remain with the team. Tapp was due $2.575 million this year which is a rich price for a rotational end.

Among those cut, Joselio Hanson, Antonio Dixon and Mike Kafka were among the most significant. Here’s a list of all of the players that were cut:
