It comes down to how bad does Chip Kelly wants Michael Vick, and the Eagles do not want to waste time. Kelly has to make an evaluation on Vick and place a value on how much the Eagles would pay, however, if it’s a pay cut Vick would be likely heading to free agency.
Vick could choose to take a cut, but it’s unlikely with Andy Reid in Kansas City and the Chiefs would likely pay Vick the money he wants.
According to Mike Florio of profootbaltalk.com, the Eagles need this issue resolved sooner or later. They could let Vick’s contract become guaranteed and seek trade offers to get something back of value.
However, that’s a risky move as they won’t set the value for Vick; the market will and the Eagles could become hostage to their own tactics. Florio wrote:
‘Time is of the essence on all steps, because if the Eagles are going to maximize trade interest and trade value, they need to do it before teams make other plans at quarterback, by signing for example a free agent.
It’s expected that the Eagles will head to the Scouting Combine with an action plan, with the hopes of getting an agreement in principle with a new team well before March 13, when trades will become finalized.’
