When one sees Earl Campbell today, you can easily see that his quality of life isn’t nearly as good as it is for other 57-year-olds. Much of it can be blamed on the punishing hits he received during his 8-year NFL career, and the rest of it can be blamed on the punishing hits he delivered during his career. His style as a running back was as physical and violent as any defender that has ever played. And he is paying the price for that today with arthritis in just about every joint in his body, along with gout. He has had bone spurs removed from his verterbrae, and at reached a point where he had to sleep on his couch because he couldn’t make it up the stairs. Throw in panic attacks since he retired and developing diabetes, it hasn’t been a fun 30 years for Houston Oilers (now Tennessee Titans) legend. The debilitating condition that Campbell has been living with has led him, like many others, to undergo extensive treatment.
