Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone announced Friday night that he's going with the rookie EJ Manuel for Sunday night's preseason matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.
The start is basically by default as Kevin Kolb is still bothered with a knee injury caused by tripping over a mat at practice, but it serves a purpose where the team gets to see Manuel in a real game situation early on.
Marrone explained the decision to keep Kolb out, via the AP/ NFL.com: "Not having him in the treatment, being away for a couple days because of a personal issue, I think that it's a little tight," he said. "He is going to dress, he is going to be there and then knock on wood if we don't need the third quarterback, if we do need one, we'll put him in there and obviously he'll just be handing the ball off and not put him in jeopardy."
As for Manuel, he's up for the challenge to make his first NFL start, albeit in preseason action.
"I'm very excited," he said. "I think we've worked out very hard these past two weeks and I know I'm going to be very excited to play against a different team. ... I think the biggest thing is to just go out and relax and play football."
