Last week Zach speculated that the Falcons would land a sixth round compensatory draft pick when they were handed out by the NFL. For those that don't know, compensatory draft picks are given out to teams that lose better (or more) free agents than what they receive. The compensatory draft picks are given out for the previous years free agents. On Monday, the NFL gave out thirty-two draft picks to fifteen teams. The Falcons received a seventh round draft pick that will be the 249th pick of the draft.

The Atlanta Falcons lost Harvey Dahl and Michael Koenen last year and they gained Ray Edwards and Reggie Kelly. How the loss of Harvey Dahl didn't out-weigh the other two "gains" by itself is hard to fathom. I'm not sure the NFL actually watched our offensive line try to play against the NY Giants in the playoffs.

With the 249th pick of the draft we are probably looking for a guy to fill out our practice roster or possibly contribute on special teams in his first year. Last year, the 249th pick of the draft was DeMarco Sampson (WR/San Diego State). He had three receptions for thirty-six yards on the year for the Arizona Cardinals. In 2010, the Carolina Panthers chose CB Robert McClain of UConn. McClain played in all games as a rookie recording fourteen tackles but didn't play in the 2011 season. In 2009, Cincinnati used the pick to take DT Clinton McDonald out of Memphis. McDonald had 35 tackles last year after not having an impact in his first two seasons.

In the past, the Falcons have been able to find some talent in the seventh round. A couple of names you may know are Jason Snelling, Kynan Forney, Todd McClure and Jamal Anderson. Under Thomas Dimetroff, the best seventh round pick so far has been Vance Walker. Don't expect this draft pick to see the field for us this year but it is nice to have another pick for depth and possibly for the future.
