It's compensatory pick time and the Falcons are in for a three course meal. One after another the Falcons just blitzed us with three straight picks and while seventh round players aren't going to have a huge impact, I really like two of the picks (with the other being an unknown to me). With the 37rd pick of the 7th round and 243rd overall pick the Falcons went with Kemal Ishmael from UCF. Draft Nasty calls him "passionate". He was also the Conference USA defensive player of the year. This is a depth pick. Chris Hope looks to be gone via free agency and that leaves us with Shann Shillinger (coming off an injury) and Charles Mitchell (a 6th rounder last year who never really saw the field) as the back-ups. Here is an interview with Ishmael from NFL Draft Zone. With the very next pick in the draft, the Falcons picked another Safety as they went with Zeke Motta from Notre Dame. National Football Post calls him a tweener and says that because of that he will struggle to make a roster. NFL Draft Scout had him as the #8 strong safety in the draft. Gil Brandt called him a "third or fourth round pick" and Mike Mayock gushed over him on NFL Network coverage when he was drafted. He will be a kid to keep an eye on in camp. A big question is if the Falcons will keep him at safety or possible move him to LB. With their final pick in the draft the Falcons went with some depth at QB as they drafted Sean Renfree. I really like this pick-up. The Falcons are solid at QB with Matt Ryan but besides him only Dominique Davis is on the roster and this is a great pick to either push Davis or potentially take the clipboard from him. Renfree completed 67% of his passes as a senior and led Duke, yes Duke, to a bowl game. That has to mean something. Look for him this fall wearing a pair of headphones and maybe even holding a clipboard on a sideline near you!
