The Falcons are facing a lot of decisions this off-season and that starts with their unrestricted free agents. We will go through them one by one and decide whether or not the Falcons should re-sign them. A lot of times it's not as easy as it looks as some decisions have more than just roster spot implications. We also have to think about the salary cap as it is expected to increase by around $1 million this season.    Is Brent Grimes going to sign his first big contract with Atlanta? That folks, is the big question looming over Flowery Branch. Brent Grimes is a Pro-Bowl caliber defensive back for the Atlanta Falcons but he missed the 2012 season with a torn Achilles. Grimes was hit with the franchise tag last season for 10.2 million and only saw action in the first game. Grimes is the best defensive back on our roster, and many insiders believe a healthy Grimes could demand top money in free agency. If you have been with us for a while, last year I wrote why Grimes was my favorite Falcon. Therefore, you can imagine where I stand on whether Atlanta should resign him. I am a devoted Team Grimey fan, so maybe I am biased... The rumor mill has been swirling the last few days concerning the Falcons franchise tag. Many believe they will opt out of using it. This could mean they are focusing on bringing in more cap room to utilize in free agency. The argument against Grimes resigning is that Atlanta almost got to the Super Bowl without him. Why should we need him? Asante is not a long term fix, and Robinson still has under-achieved based on his contract. Many claim we need to focus on the defensive line. I am one of those believers and yet I think Grimes should be our number one target in free agency. He is young, he is a good character guy, and unlike Robinson, can cover wide outs. Address a franchise defensive back, and then target line help via the draft. Although, I believe that there are some interesting free agents that should be available, and now that Atlanta is a Super Bowl contender, impact players will flock to Flowery Branch. I’m not a cap guru, but understand that Thomas Dimitroff can get anyone he wants, just like he is about to convince Tony Gonzalez for one more show. Verdict: Sign Grimes; do not let him test the market.
