Atlanta Falcons linebacker Akeem Dent has returned to practice after sustaining a concussion, and the team hopes he'll be fully cleared by Sunday.
Dent was injured in the Falcons' first preseason game against Baltimore. He missed the next contest and had not practiced until Saturday, when he took part in the non-contact drills.
Coach Mike Smith says Dent must clear one more step in the concussion protocol before he is allowed to take part fully in practice. Dent is expected to take over as the starting middle linebacker in place of Curtis Lofton, who signed with New Orleans.
Also Saturday, cornerback Darrin Walls couldn't finish practice with what appeared to be a minor quadriceps injury. Receiver Kevin Cone took a big hit late in the day but seemed OK.

Takeaways from the Falcons Second Pre-Season Game
The Atlanta Falcons have played two pre-season games so far and have come away with two losses. Does that bother me? Not in the least. The exhibition season isn't about records it's about deciding the future of your team and this team is headed in the right direction.

Falcons' Julio Jones looking to shine in Year 2
Julio Jones is still drawing double-takes over his new hairstyle.
Gone are his trademark dreadlocks, cut off and donated to charity. Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith says he didn't even recognize the receiver the first time he saw him with his shorter locks this summer.
Of course, the Falcons are more concerned about what Jones does with a helmet on his head. From all indications...
Falcons LB Akeem Dent Returns To Non-Contact Drills
Falcons middle linebacker Akeem Dent returned to practice and participated in the non-contact drills on Saturday. Its feels great to get back out there and get my reps back up, Dent said. The team is hopeful thats the last hurdle for him to clear in the leagues concussion protocol program. He was injured in the first exhibition game against the Baltimore Ravens. Dent did...
Atlanta Falcons Michael Turner looking old and slow
I have written several articles in the past few weeks regarding running backs in the realm of fantasy football. I am not particularly high on Adrian Peterson this season and I think the term ‘buyer beware” comes into play if you select Chargers RB Ryan Mathews this year. I think it’s wise to issue the same warning for Atlanta Falcons RB Michael Turner.
Turner’s fantasy value...
Falcons Preseason: Five observations from loss to Bengals
Halfway through the preseason the Falcons are 0-2, but what does that really tell us? While the first-team offense has played very well and the first-team defense has played well enough, the Falcons have lost games because of poor play by their Nos. 2 and 3 quarterbacks, penalties (some of which are a direct result of bad calls by outmatched replacement officials) and by their second...
Atlanta Falcons: Biggest Home Game of the Year
The Atlanta Falcons have several intriguing home games this year but none more exciting than their Week 13 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
Since quarterback Matt Ryan entered the league and became the starter in 2008, the Falcons have gone a combined 2-6 against their division rivals, with three of those losses happening in Atlanta.
This may not seem like a huge deal, but...

“Whoever the best backup guy is, whether if he’s a 10-year vet or a rookie, is going to be our backup quarterback,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said after practice on Saturday. “I think you have to go out there and let the play on the field [decide]. … It’s a matter of who plays the best.” Redman and Wilson have not played well...
NFL Preseason: Falcons fall to Bengals 24-19 even as Matt Ryan continues to show dominance.
ATLANTA-Even in defeat the Falcons first team offense continues to look nice in pre-season action. QB Matt Ryan continued to hit a variety of targets including his apparent main man Julio Jones.
Ryan went 18-of-21 for 174 yards and a touchdown as he took the Falcons to a halftime lead of 13-10.

Atlanta Falcons vs Cincinnati Bengals, Fantasy Football Analysis
Falcons QB Matt Ryan had one of the most impressive performances of the NFL preseason Thursday Night.
We all know that the NFL preseason doesn’t really matter. At least the final score at the end of the game doesn’t but for fantasy football owners there are plenty of things that can be taken away from these otherwise meaningless contents.
Now it is important to remember...
2012 Atlanta Falcons: Best and Worst-Case Scenario
The Falcons have become a NFL-version of the movie Groundhog Day over the past three seasons.
Just as Phil (yes, like the groundhog Phil) spends day after disappointing day reliving Groundhog Days that end so terribly wrong, the Falcons find themselves reliving the same disappointing ending to a promising season every year during Matt Ryan’s tenure.
The Falcons’ duo of general...
