Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, one of the leaders of the Atlanta Falcons' defense, will miss Sunday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys with a right ankle injury. Weatherspoon, second on the team in tackles and sacks, injured the ankle in Sunday's 30-17 win at Philadelphia. Coach Mike Smith says after Thursday's practice Weatherspoon and receiver Kevin Cone, who has a groin injury, will miss the game. The loss of Weatherspoon, a first-round pick in 2010, is a significant blow to the NFL's only undefeated team. He has had 10 or more tackles in four games this season after setting career highs with 127 tackles and four sacks in 2011. Akeem Dent, a second-year player, will be the primary replacement for Weatherspoon. --- Online: http://pro32.ap.org/poll and http://twitter.com/AP-NFL

Top ten teams in NFC at halfway point, part I

With the San Francisco 49ers on their bye week, there is no better opportunity to take a glimpse into where they stack up against the rest of the NFC teams. While 49ers101 has continued to offer weekly power rankings for the NFC west, we have yet to compare them to peers outside of their division. The halfway point of the season for most teams is coming up in week nine, and there...

The Falcons are undefeated and have a national stage to show how good they are. Week 9 preview.

The Falcons are perfect so far this season.  They're playing well in all aspects of the game, offense, defense and special teams.  On offense they're running the ball well and Turner is playing better than expected.  Can they continue in this direction?   The Falcons have a great stage to show just how good they are this week.  Will Romo and company show up big and...

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Falcons will face Dallas on Sunday without leading tackler Sean Weatherspoon, as head coach Mike Smith ruled him out on Thursday with an ankle injury. Weatherspoon, the weakside linebacker, had played every snap on defense for the Falcons this season until suffering the injury with 9:08 remaining in Sundays 30-17 win at Philadelphia. He was removed from...

Tony Gonzalez not happy with the national media

Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez isn’t happy that the national media continues to disrespect his team even though they’re currently undefeated with a 7-0 record. “Is the national media making a big deal about us like they would if it was Philly, Green Bay or New England? No, they’re not,” Gonzalez told USA TODAY Sports Thursday. “We played Philly and beat them...

Around the NFL: Week 9

Before making his debut in the NFL, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had never lost a game. Since Newton’s gotten to the big stage, his record is 5-18.  This week against Chicago, it looked like Newton would get NFL win number six, but Carolina once again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, losing 23-22. Many have credited the Bears with a hard-fought comeback win, but this...

Tony Gonzalez 95% Certain He’ll Retire After The Season

Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez maintains that there is a 95 percent chance he will call it a career following the season. “There is no doubt I could keep playing for a couple more years at a pretty high level,” said Gonzalez, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “but it’s just almost that time for me.” This has been Gonzalez’s position for some time now. Despite being 36...

Falcons CBS Robinson, Samuel find common ground

(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By GEORGE HENRY Associated Press Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson never questioned Atlanta's offseason trade for Asante Samuel. Tony Gonzalez says there’s a 95 percent chance he’ll retire after this season

Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez was asked if playing with a great quarterback like Matt Ryan may force him to play a little longer before retiring. “Well, this is probably my last year. The way I am looking for it I am preparing for this to be my last year. I am not going to go all the way,” said Gonzalez, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I keep telling everybody...

Atlanta Falcons: Week 9 NFL Power Rankings (#1)

Last week: 3 (+2) Record: 7-0 I’m moving the Falcons into the #1 spot for the first time all season, but I’m still not sold. 4 of their 7 wins have come by a touchdown or less. They’ve been very reliant on winning the turnover margin, which is inconsistent on a week to week basis. They rank just 19th in yards per play differential and 4th in rate of sustaining drives differential...

Falcons' Abraham showing no signs of slowing down

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. What were the chances that defensive end John Abraham was going to return as a member of the Atlanta Falcons last season? Abraham, who hit unrestricted free agency before the Falcons re-signed him on March 16, said he thought he was gone. "I'm about to go somewhere else and about to take the flight to Tennessee," Abraham said, then picked up his...

Atlanta's Ryan not interested in MVP discussions

(Eds: Updates. With AP Photos.) By GEORGE HENRY Associated Press Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan doesn't like to discuss his accomplishments and never says much when asked to consider his chances of becoming the NFL's MVP. The same goes when Ryan is asked about whether the Falcons can go undefeated in the regular season or if he's concerned about his winless record in...

Atlanta Falcons: What Their Undefeated Start Means Historically

Since the Houston Texans joined the NFL and caused the most recent divisional realignment in 2002, the Atlanta Falcons are the 12th team to reach Week 8 without a blemish on their schedule.Whether they will continue that run or not is anyone's guess, but if one looks back at the group that has come before them, things look good for the Falcons...to a point. The Falcons have...

The Friday Blitz: Jerryworld Comes to Town

The Friday Blitz this week will be short and to the point. I have some concerns and some thoughts on the upcoming game. First, here are some of my concerns heading into the Dallas game. Sean Weatherspoon is expected to be inactive Sunday Night with an ankle injury. Do I think it is serious? No, but he is without a doubt our leader on defense. Lose your leader = bad things can...
