Football and Futbol:
If you are like me, then at this time you are getting you fantasy league started, and looking every player up and down like they are a chick at the club. While the most valuable fantasy position is still the RB position there are still a few WRs who are projected as 1st round picks, and unless you have a top 5 pick, you may want one of these WRs. But the question is who?
NFL.com has Calvin Johnson rated as the #1 WR, as he should be. He is the best in the game. Johnson is a man amongst boys when it comes to his athletic ability. I’m not saying he shouldn’t be ranked 1st, but I will personally guarantee he won’t have a year like last. Stafford honestly is not as good as he just got paid to be. The one thing you can count on with Johnson and the Lions, is that there will be a LOT of passing. Matthew Stafford threw an NFL record 727 times in 2012. The one downfall, with Titus Young no longer on the team after three arrests in the span of a week, is that Johnson is pretty much by himself in this offense. Which means many times he’ll be double teamed by defenses. I saw a few highlights where teams went all in and triple teamed him, and he still produced the stats he did. Signing Reggie Bush will help take some of the pressure off Johnson though.
The next WR on NFL.com’s pre-draft ranking is Dez Bryant. Bryant, going into his 4th season, showed that he is ready to play football and breakout as one of the top WRs in the game. Last season Bryant had 92 receptions, over 1,300 yards, and 12 touchdowns with the Cowboys according to their official website. After several off the field issues, the Cowboys are keeping Bryant on a short leash, and with signing Romo to a new deal they are sure to throw the ball plenty. Dez is the star in this offense, pun intended.
3rd on the list, and the last of the projected first rounders, is my boy AJ Green. This will be Green’s 3rd season in the NFL. Legend has it that the 3rd season is the true “break-out” season for wide receivers (see above). Green had a very comparable season to Bryant, with 97 receptions, over 1,300 yards, and 11 touchdowns, in his second season. With the Bengals drafting Notre Dame’s star TE Tyler Eiffert in the first round, they are looking to spread the ball around, and help Andy Dalton have as many open targets as possible. In 2013, it will next to impossible for teams to double team Green. Look for him to put up video game numbers this season.
The Falcons’ Roddy White and Julio Jones are next on the list of top fantasy WRs. You obviously couldn’t go wrong with either of these. But beware, I was lucky to have White last year, but it seemed like for every week he got me 20 pts (standard scoring) the next week I would get 5 max. That is because both of these guys are WR1s and Matty Ice has to keep them both happy. If you decide to pick one these two be ready for a roller coaster of a season.
Call me biased but I’ll be looking to swipe Green in the first round this year. And I know that one of the guys in my fantasy league reading this will intentionally take him above me just for the hell of it. But the fun of fantasy football is taking what you get and trying to do the best with what you have. Since I really got into fantasy football about 3-4 years ago I’ve enjoyed watching NFL Sunday even more than I did before. And that is what fantasy football is all about. Don’t be that guy who makes your league unenjoyable for everyone you play with.
Other WRs you should consider as a #1 option if you make it out of the first round without one of the top 5.
- Brandon Marshall
- Victor Cruz
- Demaryius Thomas
- Marques Colston
- Andre Johnson
- Erik Decker
- Vincent Jackson
- Wes Welker (PPR)

Cutting a young, talented player is not something a team ever wants to do, but if his health prevents him from playing than the team has no choice. That is the conundrum the Detroit Lions faced in respect to running back Jahvid Best. As much as the team may not have liked doing
Here are three under-the-radar players to watch when the Detroit Lions open training camp next week. All three could play key roles:
Cornerback Ron Bartell
The assumption is that rookie Darius Slay or one of the team's 2012 draft picks, probably Bill Bentley, will win the vacant starting job at corner.
But what if the youngsters aren't ready?
Don't overlook the 6...

On a Monday night two years ago, Jahvid Best electrified the Detroit Lions' raucous, sellout crowd at Ford Field with an 88-yard touchdown run against the Chicago Bears.
His future looked very promising at that moment. His game-breaking speed was one of the reasons the Lions got off to a 5-0 start that season.
A week later, however, everything changed. Best suffered another...
Last year, BYU had its highest NFL Draft pick since 1982 (Jim McMahon) when Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah was the Detroit Lions 5th overall selection, despite starting less than 10 games in his college career. While it was BYU’s first draft pick since 2010, the BYU talent pool has grown substantially in the past few seasons, and the team can expect to have at least three selections...

In December, Lions coach Jim Schwartz strongly denied a Sports Illustrated report that claimed tension had developed between him and general manager Martin Mayhew for taking chances on troublesome players last season.

After an explosive start in 2011, the Lion’s run game has lacked a certain pizzaz that caused defensive coordinators nightmares every week. Mikel Leshoure and Joique Bell gave a valiant effort but could not hit the afterburners to create big plays and take pressure off Stafford and the receiving core. There is a silver lining in bringing Leshoure and Bell back for another season...
The Detroit Lions released Javhid Best on Wednesday, ending the concussion-plagued running back's time with the team, and, perhaps his days as a professional football player. But really, it felt like a move that was four years in the making.

When the Detroit Lions made running back Jahvid Best their

decided to part ways with Best yesterday, cutting the running back, according
to Gregg Rosenthal...

The Lions waived running back Jahvid Best on Wednesday.Fantasy Spin:Best sustained a concussion during the 2011 season and hasn't played since. In all likelihood, the 24-year-old has played his last down of NFL football.
The woman with Reggie Bush during Wednesday's ESPYs was not Kim Kardashian, but actually the mother of his child, Lilit Avagyan.
