PLAYERS: Geno SmithRex Ryan
TEAMS: New York Jets
After all was said, much was in fact done. The New York Jets are moving onto a new era of football at the Meadowlands. The team announced it’s not giving the starting nod to the guy who signed a $56M extension last offseason, but to its dynamic rookie Geno Smith. Indeed Smith threw three picks in the third preseason game against the Giants, and has looked rookie-like at times, however, Gang Green is serious about getting Smith into game action as soon as possible. Sanchez is out with a bum shoulder, courtesy of another Rex Ryan misstep, and Smith is non-the better for it. Geno has a lot still to learn, and don’t be shocked when you see him running for his life, as the NFL in-game pace is speeding by faster than a bullet. That said, Jets fans must realize now that this decision being handed down from Ryan and GM John Idzik means the Green and White have entered ‘rebuild’ mode. There’s no doubt the Jets will win a few games this season because of its defense. However, if Smith can somehow learn through his trial-by-fire, this team likely will bring in more weapons for him to improve next off-season. The Jets knew there would be many empty seats at its season-opener against Tampa Bay were Sanchez – healthy or not – the starting quarterback. Explain a healthy Sanchez not starting Game One to the media. Good luck. But that point is moot after Rex threw Sanchez into the Giants game towards the end of the fourth quarter. September 8 in New Jersey is where the changing of the field general will occur, and perhaps is a small portion of a larger changing-of-the-guard that looks to come at season’s end, barring a Chick-Fil-A miracle.

Thus, it can only help to have a thorough knowledge of how the different...

Injuries make predicting an NFL season impossible

The injury bug has already hit a number of teams hard in preseason action. The Buffalo Bills, for example, were hoping to roll out a premier, high-octane offense to kick off the 2013 campaign, but instead they may be rolling out an undrafted rookie quarterback to run their offense against the New England Patriots. They’re not the only team to be hit hard by injuries, especially...
