The New Orleans Saints offense sputtered last Sunday in the team's 40-32 loss to the Washington Redskins.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees confidently predicts that he and the rest of his unit will soon resemble the NFL-leading force they've been for most of the past six years -- even if Sean Payton's bounty suspension will prevent the head coach from correcting mistakes made in a season-opening upset loss to Washington.

"It's not any coach's fault when you have a holding penalty or when you have a (false start) penalty," Brees said according to the Associated Press, referring to three holding penalties and three false starts. "That's just execution by the guys that are on the field. There's ways that I can improve that. There's ways that the guys up front can improve that. There's ways that everyone on the offense can improve that. It has nothing to do with coaching and who was or wasn't there.

"Sean brings a lot. So not having him, you can certainly say, `Hey, you're missing Sean. But you've got so many other great strengths with the guys that you do have, and we're going to manage."

"We're not in the business of making excuses," Brees said. "Obviously, that's been something that has been talked about a lot during the offseason, during the preseason. In fact, I think it's maybe made too much of a big deal of. For us, it's the guys in our locker room, it's the coaches that are there. Let's take what we've got, move forward. We've built a foundation here. We know how to prepare. Let's focus on the process and know that's a winning formula for us."

Brees: Fixing Saints' offense up to him, teammates

Drew Brees thinks New Orleans' usually prolific offense will return to normal soon, even without suspended coach Sean Payton. The Saints quarterback remains confident that he and the rest of the unit are going to put up the type of numbers they have for most of the past six years - even if Payton's season-long bounty penalty keeps him from helping to correct mistakes made...

New Orleans Saints: Week 2 NFL Power Rankings (#7)

Last week: 6 (-1) Record: 0-1 It’s not quite time to hit the panic button in New Orleans. They’ll get better as the season goes on. After the offseason they had, it’s understandable if they struggle out of the gate and if anyone can get through this, it’s a Drew Brees led team. However, they need to win the division to go anywhere in the playoffs because I don’t trust them...

Week 2 top 75 flex rankings

I’ve written and re-written the intro for this week’s flex rankings at least twenty times now, and the best I can come up with is the very simple but truthful: week one did not disappoint. Unless you were a Wes Welker owner. Or Chris Johnson.. But, for the most part the NFL kickoff week provided us with plenty of breakout performances, confirmation of pre-draft fantasy...

Saints' Vilma meets with Goodell

New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma spent Monday afternoon having a ''very frank, very truthful'' meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell about his suspension that was temporarily lifted. Vilma was one of four players suspended by Goodell in the bounty scandal. But an appeals panel earlier this month said Goodell must clarify his rulings to ensure no...

Fantasy Football Week 2: New Orleans Saints vs. Carolina Panthers

New Orleans Saints @ Carolina PanthersNew Orleans:  Well, the season without offensive guru Sean Payton didn’t start out as planned, as the Saints ended up getting run over by the RGIII hype train in their own backyard.  Drew Brees started out slow, but ended up with his fairly standard good numbers as the Saints staged a furious comeback that fell just short. Now, Brees and the...

Thursday NFL far worse than bounties

If and when Jonathan Vilma meets with Roger Goodell, the Saints linebacker should ask the commissioner a simple question: What is more dangerous, a symbolic, thousand-dollar bounty system or the Baltimore Ravens opening the season playing four NFL games in 17 days? The elimination of bounties will not stop one NFL defensive player from curb-stomping an opposing player if given...

Saints LB Jon Vilma Expected To Be Healthy Enough To Return After PUP List Ex

Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma spends his days now rehabbing his surgically repaired knee at the team's Metairie headquarters, riding a stationary bike but unable to participate in team drills. Although Vilma temporarily has been re-instated after being suspended for the entire season for his role in the Saints' bounty scandal, he is on the team's reserve/physically...

Steve Smith on Saints targeting him: “This isn’t powder puff”

When asked today if he thought Saints defenders would target him this week, Carolina’s Steve Smith told reporters “this isn’t powderpuff” (Credit: AP Photo) Shortly following the breaking of the Saints Bounty-gate scandal, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith came forward and said he knew the Saints were dirty because a Saints player had once taken a cheap shot at...

Footy Weekend Guide: Can The Gunners ‘Shoot Down’ The Saints

(1-2-0) Arsenal – Southampton (0-0-3) Saturday, September 15, 2012 10:00AM EST (Fox Soccer 2 Go) Three defeats for newly promoted Southampton is quite deceiving for how they have played in their return to the English top level. Having to play Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal in three of their first four matches isn’t the [...]

Saints Nation: Defensive and Special Teams Player Grades vs. Redskins

Anytime you give up 40 points to anyone, it's safe to assume the defensive grades won't be good. The major concerns after this week are a non existent pass rush and poor coverage. The really bothersome thing is that while I'm convinced the offensive woes can be cleaned up pretty quickly by eliminating penalties, I'm not sure the defensive problems have a quick...

NFL Asserts Roger Goodell Has Full Authority To Impose Discipline On Players

The NFL moved to clear up what it says is confusion stemming from the ruling by the CBA Appeals Panel that temporarily overturned suspensions of four players for their role in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal. The four players – Jonathan Vilma, Scott Fujita, Will Smith and Anthony Hargrove – are scheduled to meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell next week as part of the disciplinary...

Saints-Panthers Preview

Looking to put an offseason of turmoil behind them, the New Orleans Saints instead invited more scrutiny by losing to a team led by a Heisman Trophy-winning, dual-threat rookie quarterback. They never had that problem against Cam Newton last year. The Saints hope to avoid becoming the only NFC South team without a victory Sunday when they visit Newton and the Carolina Panthers...
