It’s a sad day in Broncoland and to all those who were touched by Mike Heimerdinger, who died Friday from a rare form of cancer. He was 58.

Heimerdinger had two coaching stints in Denver _ as a receiver coach from 1995-99 that included the team’s back-to-back Super Bowl wins _ and again from 2006-07, where he was essentially the offensive coordinator and mentor during quarterback Jay Cutler’s first two seasons. He then took a similar job with Tennessee Titans in large part because head coach Jeff Fisher gave him authority to run the offense, something his college roommate Mike Shanahan wasn’t yet willing to do. Heimerdinger remained the Titans’ offensive coordinator until Fisher left as head coach after last season.

His wife said “Dinger” fought his cancer to the end. I can vouch for that. I last saw Heimerdinger patrolling an Indianapolis hotel lobby during the NFL scouting combine in February. His cancer affliction was well-known in the NFL community, he half-jokingly that he was there just to let league coaches and executives know that he was still alive.

A good man has left us.
