After visits with the Jaguars, Bills, and Jets, former Colts safety Bob Sanders has found a new home for the 2011 season with the San Diego Chargers. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Sanders plans to sign a one-year deal with the Chargers.
There was a time when Sanders was considered one of the top safeties in the NFL, but he’s been battling with injuries the last three seasons–limiting the former Defensive Player of the Year to just nine games since 2008. His most recent injury came in the opening week of the 2010 season against the Houston Texans in which he tore the biceps tendon in his right arm.
The main reason why Indianapolis decided to part ways with Sanders was because of his hefty base salary for the 2011 season. The Colts believed it was too risky to pay Sanders–who refused to restructure his contract–$5.5 million in base salary with his inability to stay healthy over the last three seasons.
