Former standout college coach interviews with Chargers

Former Stanford head coach David Shaw has interviewed for another NFL job.

The Los Angeles Chargers announced on Thursday that they interviewed Shaw for their head-coaching vacancy.

Shaw was the head coach at Stanford for 12 seasons from 2011-22. He finished with a record of 96-54 with the Cardinal and is the winningest coach in school history. Stanford won the Pac-12 three times under Shaw and had two wins in the Rose Bowl.

Shaw resigned in 2022 following consecutive 3-9 seasons, but he has received NFL interest in recent years because of the success he had early on at Stanford.

Before taking a year off from coaching last year, Shaw interviewed with the Denver Broncos for their head-coaching job. There may have been some unique circumstances that led to that interview.

Shaw seems unlikely to land the Chargers job, but meeting with them should help keep him fresh on the minds of NFL executives and coaches. If Shaw decides he wants to coach in the league in 2024, there will likely be opportunities for him to do so.
