By now we all know about the bounties with the Saints. It also doesn’t take a genius to realize that bounty was something in football’s past, the difference is no one narked out anyone back then.
Something new about the bounties is word that offensive players also used them. You know the saying “where there is smoke, there is fire.” Former Minnesota Viking great Cris Carter has admitted to using bounties as he explains here:
“It’s the first time I’ve ever admitted it. However, I put a bounty on guys before. I put bounties on guys. And the guys tried to take me out; a guy tried to take a cheap shot on me. I put a bounty on him, right now.”
Carter claimed he wasn’t the only one to use bounties during his time in the NFL. Carter was a member of the Eagles for the 1989 Thanksgiving Day game against the Cowboys in the so-called “Bounty Bowl” in which Eagles coach Buddy Ryan Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman and kicker Luis Zendejas. The league subsequently investigated that game but couldn’t find proof bounties were used, though Carter said Tuesday he personally witnessed them that day. It’s not by accident that Carter learned from Buddy Ryan, and Gregg Williams was a disciple of Ryan, who used the biggest bounty system in the history of the NFL.
Carter claims that his bounties were not set to injure anyone, but merely to protect himself and more, he said that before the game, he would put change on his helmet, and that told the offensive lineman to protect him.
If you ask me, there is no difference between offensive and defensive bounties. Both of them are wrong and shouldn’t be a part of the game.
My question is, will this latest news that was reported by Pro Football talk, open the door for more offensive players to come out and admit to offensive bounties?
