The Buffalo Bills' season took a major turn for the worse today with the news that star running back Fred Jackson may be out for the year with an injury to his lower right leg. Bills coach Chan Gailey said Jackson is out for Sunday's key AFC East game against the New York Jets. And Gailey said Jackson might be done for the year. "Fred's not good, and I know he'll miss this one," Gailey said. "Then we'll have to decide what happens from there." Asked if there was a chance Jackson could be back before the end of the season, Gailey said: "I don't know about that. We'll have to wait and see." (TBN)

Mind of Joe:

Goodbye, Season...Hello, Top 10 pick! Yeah, could this season go off the train tracks any more? We all know how Jackson accounts for 40% of the Bills offense and this blow pretty much dooms the offense. You also have to wonder how much this injury plays into his contract negotiations, especially if (Gulp) CJ Spiller actually plays well in his absence. I haven't said this in a while, but I still believe the Bills hire-ups want CJ Spiller to overtake Jackson. The status of being a 1st round pick and being their guy has something to do with it.

Look, the season was probably finished before Jackson went down and to be honest, I'm all for playing younger guys at this point. It's football 101 when it comes to a rebuilding season, which this has become. As much as Spiller has been a disappointment, it's probably good for the franchise to see what they have with him. I would even listen to people say that this could be a do-or-die situation for him. There are no more excuses about Jackson being too good to take out. If Spiller goes down the road of Aaron Maybin for the rest of the year, I really can't put into words how bad of a draft pick he has become.

For Jackson, you have to hope this isn't a lingering issue for him. I know some want to ignore his age, but I firmly believe that the human body starts going down hill when you turn 30. I used the Priest Holmes analogy when I did a post last month about giving Jackson a raise and age/injuries were a concern for me. Jackson is a bruiser and we all know if you tend to be a back that takes a lot of hits, your shelf life is going to be shorter. It will be interesting to see what happens in the offseason for him. Just speculation on my part, but I could see a holdout situation going into next year if Jackson doesn't get a raise. He knows that he won't get major money when his contract expires after next season because of his age.

Anyways, this is just a huge blow for the Bills. They have so many injuries on both sides of the ball that I don't think this team will win another game this season. Yup, it's sad.
