Yet again, the Chargers defense was able to hold the Denver Broncos under 30 points. Denver has played 17 games this season and been held under 30 points only four times — three of those against San Diego. The defense was a stop away from potentially winning this game and for that reason, we had to honor two of the playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. Donald Butler: Please, pay the man. Butler finished with five tackles, a defended pass and an incredible interception. The interception was not only an outstanding display of athleticism, but showed Butler’s quick thinking ability with the linebacker tapping two feet before going out of bounds. After Te’o left the game, DB was the stabilizing force in the center of the defense. It would be an absolute shame if Butler isn’t in powder blue and gold next year because his services will be desired by a whole slew of different teams. Jahleel Addae: Addae was San Diego’s leading tackler on Sunday with eight total tackles (six solo). The Chargers forced two turnovers against Denver and both kept the game from getting out of hand, thus allowing the offense a chance to tie things up late. Addae stripped the ball away from Denver tight end Julius Thomas in the second quarter and gave the offense great field position. Unfortunately, Nick Novak missed a field goal on the ensuing drive, but Addae and the rest of the Chargers defense gave this team a chance to win. It was the stagnant effort by the offense in the first half that really cost this team in the long run. The Chargers need to reevaluate the contracts of Derek Cox and Antonio Gates.
