In his 11 days since entering the NFL limelight, Geno Smith has remained in the news cycle -- and for all the wrong reasons.

From abruptly firing his agents to anonymous executives reportedly expressing concerns with his "diva"-like character, the Jets' new quarterback has repeatedly experienced his "welcome to the big leagues" moment.

Smith, however, doesn't seem too fazed.

"I don't worry about what people say — my skin is pretty thick," Smith told Jim Corbett of USA Today. "I've never been in trouble."

Specifically, Smith was asked about the recent Yahoo! Sports report that said he was more preoccupied with his phone than speaking with coaches during pre-draft team visits. The 22-year-old flatly denied the claims, adding he "couldn't care less" what people say about him.

"That's not true," he said. "I got strong remarks from all the teams I visited with. ... I couldn't care less what's coming out in the media because I know what's true."

Smith's potential character flaws became a hot topic after Day 1 of the draft, when reports surfaced that he decided to leave New York City and head home.

He threw cold water on that, too.

"Coming back on Day 2 was never not an option for me. ... My goal was to go up on that stage and shake Mr. (Roger) Goodell's hand. And that's what we did."

As for his now-former agents, Smith said the decision to part ways was made with his best interests in mind.

"Parts of the draft experience were tough, but not all of it. With that entire process, you can see where some things went wrong. ... Choosing to leave those guys was the best decision for me at the time. That's what I went with. I think I'm pretty good with my decision making. So I trust myself."

If his decision making is as good as he says it is, Smith will try to avoid the media spotlight and get to work with his new team. The expression "any publicity is good publicity" definitely doesn't apply to him.
