One week on the football field is all Terrell Thomas needed to get most of his quiet confidence back and a handful of practices is all he needed to once again believe in his battered body. Now the Giants cornerback is pondering the next step in his complicated return to action. After two years away Thomas may suit up for this Sunday’s preseason home game against the Indianapolis Colts. “We don’t know yet” Thomas said Wednesday. “We’re just taking it one day at a time. . . . There’s no rush to get me out there but if I’m ready to go I’m ready to go.” The Giants had a scare when safety Antrel Rolle sprained his ankle on Monday but they could soon gain back a valuable vet in Thomas. Rolle was seen walking without a boot and doing drills on Wednesday. While nothing is certain — and Thomas stressed that the team “still has a lot of time before Sunday” — there’s a growing feeling that Thomas who is battling to come back from a third ACL tear in his right knee could be ready to play. Thomas said he would “need” a preseason game. He hasn’t seen action in an NFL game since he tore his ACL for the second time in a preseason matchup against the Bears two years ago. He re-tore that same ACL last year in camp. “I think I need to be out there in a preseason game” he said “to get that live experience go against different competition get that first hit.” He’s progressed quickly toward that goal since coming off the physically-unable-to-perform list early last week. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said Tuesday that Thomas had shown good “burst” and “the ability to come out of a break” while handling a light workload on Monday. Tuesday he took another major step handling reps during 11-on-11 team drills. He wasn’t eased into the action either; Thomas started as first-team nickel corner covering Victor Cruz in the slot. “They wanted to see what I can do” Thomas said. “I mean Victor’s a Pro Bowl-caliber player a great Giant and great competition for me to go against and get work and get better.
