Gophers make 2013 recruiting class official

MINNEAPOLIS As head coach Jerry Kill prepares for his third season at the University of Minnesota, he and his staff signed 19 recruits Wednesday to letters of intent on National Signing Day. After signing 10 players from the state of Minnesota last year, Kill's 2013 recruiting class has just one Minnesotan. Eight of this year's recruits were given three-star ratings by Scout.com, while the rest were two-star recruits. A full list of players who signed their letters of intent Wednesday:DE'VONDRE CAMPBELL, LB, 6-foot-5, 225 pounds Hutchinson Community College, Hutchinson, Kan. Scout.com ranking: Three stars About Campbell: A pleasant surprise for the Gophers on National Signing Day, Campbell didn't commit to Minnesota until Wednesday morning. The three-star linebacker also had offers from big schools such as Texas, Tennessee and Kansas State. Campbell, who has three years of eligibility remaining after playing one year at the junior college level, could end up being one of the biggest gets for Kill and his staff. ERIC CARTER, WR, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds Lake Gibson High School, Lakeland, Fla. Scout.com ranking: Two stars About Carter: He originally committed to play at Cincinnati but flipped is commitment to play for the Gophers. He runs a 4.50 40-yard dash, according to Scout.com. Carter had 54 catches for 801 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior. RAYFIELD DIXON, LB, 6-foot-3, 205 pounds Seminole Ridge High School, Loxahatchee, Fla. Scout.com ranking: Two stars About Dixon: He had 89 tackles and six sacks during his senior season at Seminole Ridge, where he was a linebacker. He also had offers from Louisville, West Virginia, Tulane and Louisiana. BERKLEY EDWARDS, RB, 5-foot-9, 190 pounds Chelsea High School, Chelsea, Mich. Scout.com ranking: Three stars About Edwards: Edwards comes to the Gophers with an NFL pedigree, as he is the brother of current New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards. His father, Stan, also played in the NFL for six seasons. Berkley rushed for 1,329 yards and 21 touchdowns for Chelsea High School during his senior season. HENDRICK EKPE, DE, 6-foot-5, 230 pounds Lewisville High School, Lewisville, Texas Scout.com ranking: Two stars About Ekpe: His older brother, Scott, is currently on the Gophers roster and got plenty of playing time as a freshman defensive lineman this past season, playing in all 13 games. Hendrick had offers from other Big Ten schools, including Iowa and Northwestern. He had 24 tackles and 2 sacks as a senior. JORDAN HINOJOSA, DT, 6-foot-2, 295 pounds Coffeyville Community College, Coffeyville, Texas Scout.com ranking: Two stars About Hinojosa: He was a member of last year's recruiting class but never joined the Gophers due to academic issues. He instead played a season at Coffeyville Community College, where he made 13 tackles and had two sacks in seven games. DONOVAHN JONES, QB, 6-foot-3, 190 pounds Dutchtown High School, Hampton, Ga. Scout.com ranking: Two stars About Jones: Jones was a last-minute get for Kill and his staff, as he committed on Tuesday after switching his commitment from Missouri to Minnesota. As a quarterback at Dutchtown, Jones threw for 1,609 yards and 16 touchdowns and ran for 634 yards on 105 carries. DE'NIRO LASTER, WR, 6-foot-4, 230 pounds Cleveland Heights High School, University Heights, Ohio Scout.com ranking: Three stars About Laster: He was a two-way player in high school and was ranked as the No. 146 wide receiver in the nation by Scout.com. Minnesota has him listed as a linebacker, a position in which he made 70 tackles and four sacks as a senior at Cleveland Heights. ALEX MAYES, OT, 6-foot-5, 285 pounds Van Alstyne High School, Van Alstyne, Texas Scout.com ranking: Three stars About Mayes: Scout.com ranked Mayes as the 54th-best offensive tackle in the nation. He started all four years at Van Alstyne and earned first-team all-district and honorable mention all-state honors as a senior. DALETAVIUS MCGHEE, CB, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds Cedar Grove High School, Ellenwood, Ga. Scout.com ranking: Two stars About McGhee: He was a late addition to the Gophers' 2013 class, as he committed on Monday. As a two-way player in high school, McGhee made 89 tackles on defense and caught five passes for 61 yards during his senior season. JALEN MYRICK, CB, 5-foot-10, 200 pounds Savannah Christian Prep, Savannah, Ga. Scout.com ranking: Two stars About Myrick: Myrick brings speed to the Gophers' secondary he was the state runner-up in the 100-meter dash as a junior. At 200 pounds, Myrick has good size for a cornerback. He was also a running back in high school, rushing for 1,130 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior. DEMARIS PEPPERS, DT, 6-foot-3, 256 pounds Fairley High School, Memphis Scout.com ranking: Two stars About Peppers: During his senior season at Fairley, Peppers had 57 tackles and led his team with 11 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. He took part in the 2012 Toyota Tennessee East-West All-Star Game. OWEN SALZWEDEL, DE, 6-foot-6, 240 pounds Beaver Dam High School, Beaver Dam, Wis. Scout.com ranking: Three stars About Salzwedel: The Gophers poached Salzwedel from across the border as the lone Wisconsin native in this year's recruiting class. He made 89 tackles in eight games as a senior, had 11 sacks and broke up eight passes. Salzwedel also plays basketball for Beaver Dam. Scout.com pegs him as the nation's 95th-best defensive end. RYAN SANTOSO, K, 6-foot-5, 270 pounds Pace High School, Pace, Fla. Scout.com ranking: Two stars About Santoso: He has the size of a lineman, but don't let the numbers fool you: Santoso is indeed a kicker. He participated in the Under Armour All-America Game as a senior. Scout.com has him ranked as the eighth-best kicker in the nation. Santoso also punted in high school. CHRIS STREVELER, QB, 6-foot-2, 190 pounds Marian Central Catholic High School, Woodstock, Ill. Scout.com ranking: Two stars About Streveler: As a senior, the dual-threat Streveler had a combined 3,521 yards and 48 touchdowns at Marian Central Catholic, including 2,397 passing yards. His only other Division I offer was from South Dakota State. Streveler is one of four signees already enrolled at Minnesota. DAMIEN WILSON, MLB, 6-foot-2, 230 pounds Jones County Junior College, Ellisville, Miss. Scout.com ranking: Two stars About Wilson: Wilson is one of three junior college commits in this year's class. He made 122 tackles and added two sacks in nine games this season. Wilson spent his freshman season at Alcorn State University before transferring to Jones County. CHRIS WIPSON, OLB, 6-foot-1, 210 pounds Wayzata High School, Plymouth, Minn. Scout.com ranking: Three stars About Wipson: After signing 10 Minnesotans in last year's recruiting class, the Gophers landed just one: Wipson. The Wayzata product tore his ACL in November. He had offers from several other schools, but Minnesota was the only Big Ten school to offer. Wipson was named first-team all-state and had 57 tackles before injuring his knee. DREW WOLITARSKY, WR, 6-foot-3, 200 pounds Canyon High School, Canyon Country, Calif. Scout.com ranking: Three stars About Wolitarsky: Wolitarsky is the all-time leading receiver in California history with 281 catches for 5,147 yards, breaking records held by current NFL receiver Steve Smith. Wolitarsky made 89 catches for 1,275 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior. NATE WOZNIAK, TE, 6-foot-9, 250 pounds Center Grove High School, Greenwood, Ind. Scout.com ranking: Three stars About Wozniak: Wozniak's size might mean the Gophers convert him to an offensive lineman.
