As reported earlier, the Patriots have signed kicker Stephen Gostkowski to a four-year contract extension. This move is a stark contrast to the movement, or lack thereof, with Logan Mankins’ contract situation. Both players entered the 2010 offseason in similar situations, as restricted free agents. Both players received tenders at the higher end. Ownership stated that it wanted both players to remain Patriots for a long time. Mankins, upset at receiving a tender and not a new contract to his liking, decided not to sign his tender to play this season and instead has held out throughout the summer. Mankins is prepared to sit the entire season and has blasted ownership, calling them liars, and has requested a trade. Gostkowski has handled his situation much, much differently.
