Found February 22, 2012 on The Daily Dolphin:
The Green Bay Packers didn’t just lock up tight end Jermichael Finley with a new contract on Wednesday night. They may have also made it significantly harder for the Dolphins to acquire impending free agent quarterback Matt Flynn. Finley, 24, signed a two-year deal worth $14 million to stay with Green Bay through the 2013 [...]

TE Finley confirms new Packers deal on Twitter

Tight end Jermichael Finley says he has agreed to a new deal with the Green Bay Packers. Finley posted a message on his Twitter account Wednesday night appearing to confirm reports that he has agreed to return to the team. Finley wrote, ''It's TRUE! Thank you so much to the Packers organization, all my fans, and my beautiful wife.'' Finley was set to become...

Franchise tag is a real possibility for Matt Flynn

According to Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, there’s a really good chance that the Packers will place the franchise tag on back up quarterback Matt Flynn and then turn around and trade him.  The NFL discourages stuff like this, but one NFL front-office executive said that the league doesn’t discourage a tag-and-trade scenario strongly enough. Per Dougherty, an...

With Finley signed, Pack can tag, trade Flynn

GREEN BAY, Wis. When the Packers reached an agreement Wednesday with tight end Jermichael Finley on a two-year deal, it accomplished two important things in one move. First, the team retained Finley in a simple way when the negotiations could have gotten complicated very quickly. Second, it left Green Bay's franchise tag in play. With quarterback Matt Flynn entering free agency...

On Brunell, Flynn, and the tag-and-trade

The Packers may be looking to sell Matt Flynn's services to some desperate team. The Green Bay Packers are the team that wrote the book on the tage and trade. In a piece for TGS, Will Horton highlights some of the big deals that have made the tag-and-trade option legitimate for the trading team. First off, for those of you that didn't yet know, the Packers re-signed...

Finley due big bonus early in 2013

The Packers avoided a potentially nasty contract dispute with tight end Jermichael Finley by working out a two-year deal Wednesday, as Florio reported here. The structure of the deal gave protection to both sides. According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Finley will make more than the tight end franchise number in 2012 ($5.75…

Report: Flynn to Dolphins not a slam dunk

“It’s hardly a no-brainer that free agent Matt Flynn is destined for Miami based on the Joe Philbin factor. True, Philbin was the offensive coordinator in Green Bay under whom Flynn looked like Bart Starr, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers rolled into one in Green Bay’s 2011 season finale. True, Philbin is head coach in Miami now, and the Dolphins would be wise to dive off the...

GM Phil Emery’s silence at the combine a rookie mistake

INDIANAPOLIS — Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson was so reluctant to reveal anything of substance at his press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine that when asked to say anything about backup quarterback Matt Flynn he barely budged — acknowledging there’s a Matt Flynn who plays...
