The eleven year veteran was officially released by the Cowboys, which is something owner Jerry Jones said would happen. For most Cowboys fans this comes as no surprise. When current Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Miami Dolphins Bill Parcells was hired to coach the Cowboys a number of years ago, Ellis requested a trade then as well. He wasn't sure of his place on defense, so he wanted out. Parcells denied his request and the linebacker eventually flourished playing alongside former first round pick DeMarcus Ware. With the move the team stands to save almost $5 million dollars toward this season's salary cap So with Ellis' eight sacks gone, who will replace the one time Pro Bowler? Anthony Spencer, the team's first round pick a couple of years ago, will take over for Ellis. While we can't compare the career stats of both players, Spencer does have 4.5 career sacks and 70 career tackles. Spencer stands at 6-3, 255 pounds and by the way, he's almost 10 years younger than Ellis. This season will prove to be one of experiment and analysis for the boys at Valley Ranch. Quarterback Tony Romo lost his leading receiver in Terrell Owens and no one is sure how Roy Williams will replace T.O.'s production. But with three solid running backs, a perennial Pro Bowl quarterback, and a defense that led the NFL in sacks last season, I would say that the Cowboys are still in a pretty strong position to take the division. -JH
