TAMPA Cam Newton did a nice job executing the two-minute offense at the end of the first half Sunday, getting the Panthers in position for Olindo Mare's 43-yard field goal that put Carolina up 24-12 on Tampa Bay as the half ended. With 13 seconds left, Newton scrambled to his left and hit Brandon LaFell, who got out of bounds with three seconds left at the end of the 31-yard completion. Newton was 7 of 13 for 125 yards with a touchdown in the first half, despite getting a lot of pressure from the Bucs' banged-up defensive line. With the Bucs threatening to steal momentum and tighten up the game, Newton threw a laser to Legedu Naanee for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 7:04 left in the first half. The Panthers faced a third-and-8 when Newton threw a seed down the right seam for Naanee, who held on despite a big hit from safety Sean Jones. It was Naanee's first touchdown since signing with the Panthers in training camp. He celebrated by dunking the ball over the goal post, a...

Are the Panthers primed for a big finish?

There was a school of thought during the preseason that the Panthers, given their youth and new identity with Ron Rivera and his staff, might start slowly and get better as the season wore on.    That appears to be the way it's playing out.    The Panthers' 38-19 victory over Tampa Bay Sunday was their most complete performance of the season and gave them a second...
