Reporters caught up with David Harris during his annual football camp at Houseman Field in Michigan. During the interview he spoke about his current situation and his desire to stay with the Jets:
The Jets placed the franchise tag on their leading tackler before the lockout, which, under terms of the old labor agreement, binds him to the team for the upcoming season and guarantees him the average of the five highest-paid players at his position. If the same rules apply, that figure is $10.1 million.
If not, he could become an unrestricted free agent able to sign with any team.
He earned a reported $550,000 in 2010 in the final season of the four-year rookie contract he signed with the Jets after being chosen in the second round of the 2007 NFL draft out of the University of Michigan.
Harris said he still anticipates signing a long-term contract with the Jets.
He would rather go that route, he said, instead of performing in 2011 under terms of the franch...
