Running back Frank Gore, the NFL's 10th-leading rusher entering the final week of the regular season, feels much better physically than a year ago, he said.
"I feel stronger toward the end now than I did last year," Gore said on Wednesday. "I had nicks and bruises. Now I feel still fresh. I feel good."
Gore credits his fresh body -- relatively speaking, of course -- to backups Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James averaging more than six rushing attempts per game. He has also seen a smaller workload during the week in practices, he said.
Gore has rushed for 1,146 yards, the sixth time in his past seven seasons he has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark. He is averaging 4.8 yards per rushing attempt as he adjusts to a new running style with Colin Kaepernick at quarterback.
"We do more different things with Kap, as far as running the ball different," Gore said. "So I have to just be more patient with it. (I) don't know if I'm going to get it with the read-option game.
"You read the same thing. You read the same people. Some plays you don't know whether he's going to keep it or not."

Sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone and without Justin Smith the San Francisco 49ers defense immediately becomes average. Since Smith left the game in the second half against the New England Patriots, the 49ers defense has given up 76 points. Let me repeat that – 76 points! That is just pathetic. If Smith doesn’t return for the playoffs the defense...
Randy Moss figured to play a smaller role in San Francisco then he had in his previous NFL stops. No longer. Moss has moved up to the No. 2 spot on the 49ers depth chart.
The reason of Moss’ promotion is injuries to Kyle Williams and Mario Manningham. Manningham tore his ACL and PCL, leaving him out for the season.
Behind Moss on the depth chart will be rookie A.J. Green and Ted...

A.J. Jenkins' time is now. Following Sunday's season-ending knee injury to Mario Manningham, the 49ers' first-round pick finally figures to be a part of a game plan. He's been active three times this season, but has yet to catch a pass, while sitting behind the team's veteran stable of receivers. Jenkins has quietly gone about his business, trying to soak...
Patrick Willis believes the San Francisco 49ers can still be a great defense even without All-Pro tackle Justin Smith.
The 49ers might have to spend the rest of this season finding out whether or not Willis, their All-Pro linebacker and defensive leader, is correct.
Smith is unlikely to play Sunday in the regular-season finale against Arizona because of a partially torn left triceps...
Mario Manningham limped through the locker room on crutches, holding a towel around his waist while trying to keep his head high and sport a smile.
That's not an easy thing to do for the San Francisco 49ers right now.
Manningham is out of the season with left knee injury after he getting tackled low by Leroy Hill and fumbling in the third quarter of San Francisco's 42-13...
According to CSNBayArea.com, 49ers tight end Vernon Davis has been medically cleared by an independent neurologist after suffering a concussion during this past Sunday’s game against the Seahawks.
Now Davis must remain symptom free after performing non-contact football work.

On Christmas Eve, San Francisco 49ers fans learned that WR Mario Manningham would be lost for the remainder of the year after suffering a knee injury. Manningham suffered a torn ACL and PCL in the Niners loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The injury now leaves the Niners dangerously thin at the wide receiver position. San Francisco will now roll Randy Moss into the No. 2 receiver...
It’s become more than apparent that the San Francisco 49ers intend to move forward with Colin Kaepernick as their starting quarterback, which means that Alex Smith‘s time with the franchise is likely coming to an end in the next few months.
There are a number of teams in need of help at the quarterback position and Smith has been tossed out as a potential option for teams like...
San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, who suffered a concussion in the game against Seattle, is not practicing Wednesday.Fantasy Spin:Forty-Niners coach Jim Harbaugh called it minor and is optimistic that he will play on Sunday, but these days any concussion requires testing. Davis hasn't done much over the past four games catching a total of five passes for 56 yards and no scores.
Patrick Willis believes the 49ers can still be a great defense even without All-Pro tackle Justin Smith. The Niners might have to spend the rest of this season finding out whether or not Willis, their All-Pro linebacker and defensive leader, is correct.
San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis likely will play in Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals despite sustaining a concussion last weekend, CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported. Davis will spend much of this week going through the NFL's concussion protocol before it's determined whether he can play against the Arizona Cardinals in San Francisco'...
Jim Harbaugh kept his sentences short and information at a minimum Monday, repeating a phrase he will rely on following the worst loss of his NFL coaching career: regroup, refit and reorganize. That's all the 49ers can do at this point.
