Hakeem Nicks (Heels in the Pro’s)While most of Tar Heel nation prepares for their first, and probably biggest, battle of the 2013 season… a match up with South Carolina, in the pro’s a former UNC football player, Hakeem Nicks, prepares himself to return to full action. Last weekend the 6’1″/208 lbs wide out caught a pair of receptions in limited action while returning from a groin injury. In an interview given the fifth year pro, entering his last season with the Giants, said the following when asked if he was at less then 100%…
“Yeah that’s accurate,” said Nicks, “That’s my first preseason game, just trying to get in that groove to build myself up for Week 1.“
On the positive side, the 25 year old receiver said that the groin injury was fully healed, and called the long battle to be done with it a learning experience. But that is not the only learning experience that Nicks has had to go through this off-season, since he was hoping for a new contract with the Giants, but the New York franchise decided to pay fellow wide receiver Victor Cruz instead.
“It’s definitely motivation, but I’m a believer in I’m going to get whatever I can handle, so I don’t even worry about that. It’s going to take care of itself,” he said. “I just need to stay healthy, play football, win games and contribute to the team in the best way possible.“
Last season was Nicks’ worst since he entered the National Football League, with the exception of catches for first downs, where he came in just ahead of his rookie season. It does not take a GM or a genius to figure out that the young man from Charlotte, N.C. needs to have a productive, and injury free, season in order to get a good value contract.
Hakeem Nicks NFL Stats
On the flip side of things, if Nicks does have a season like he did in his second and third year in the NFL, the New York Giants might just regret the fact that they did not take care of their wide out earlier. With a quarterback like the Giants have and the defenses focusing of the salsa dancing Cruz, Nicks might waltz into his best season yet in the pro’s. This could mean a sweet season for his team and a sweeter pay out for himself when it’s all said and done.
Come on back today to ISPORTSWEB as I will be blogging about another former Heel that is now a Giant, Marvin Austin, who’s career is not looking as bright as Nicks.
