Marvin Austin (Heels in the Pro’s) Marvin Austin left North Carolina in 2011 after being engulfed in a dark cloud that is just now beginning to let the sun shine through on Chapel Hill. On the other side, he went to the National Football League expected to be the same type of freakish defensive tackle he was when in college. That expected talent and the hype that went with it made him the 52nd pick in that season’s draft, going to the New York Giants in the second round. How many of us that follow UNC Football thought that Austin, 6’2″/312 lbs, would be a great addition to a core of players that seem to always shine year in, year out? If no one does, I will raise my hand, as I believed the young man from Washington D.C. would strive under the tuteledge of some of the best defensive linemen in the NFL. From his performances on the field since making it to the pro’s I was wrong. But now, from an article I read online, things might be even worst than expected for the defensive tackle. Right now Marvin Austin is working with the New York Giants’ third team, and it seems his roster spot is anything but guaranteed for the upcoming season. The coach that watches him the most was quoted as saying… “He just can’t disappear when the pads come on,” says defensive line coach Ronald Nunn. With less than a week before the first cuts are made this is make or break time for the 24 year old with lots of potential and even more bad luck, as much can be blamed on injury,  Austin lost his whole rookie season to a torn pectoral muscle and last season he had several nagging injuries, which cut his season in half, playing in just eight games. But at the end of the line, someone of his capabilities has to rise through all of this, especially when his professional career is on the line. Austin considers himself among one of the best at his position, and while I am not here to argue that point, what I like to say is that right now he needs to show that he is one of the best D lineman on the team and move up in the depth charts. Cause if he does not, he might not have a spot come Week One. If there was ever crunch time for someone it is now for Austin. Hopefully he will make the roster and show the coaching staff that one more chance was the right thing to do. If not, The story of this former Tar Heel could definitely be classified in the “what could have been” department.
