FLORHAM PARK–In case you haven’t heard, Derrick Mason has been traded to the Houston Texans for a reported conditional seventh round Draft pick.
GM Mike Tannenbaum spoke this morning and said, “Suffice it to say [Mason] didn’t play at the level he had hoped and we had hoped.” Tannenbaum insisted that the trade was based totally on Mason’s on-the-field performance and had nothing to do with the comments that Mason made after the Patriots game that were perceived by some to be a knock on the team, when he talked about there being “cracks.”
Tannenbaum also cited Jeremy Kerley’s fast development as being a factor in their comfort level in letting Mason go.
Mason was informed of the trade last night by Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan and according to Tannenbaum, Mason was “initially surprised.”
Ryan, who has known Mason a long time, expressed his respect and admiration for him both as a player and a person. Ryan said the two spoke, but that he wanted to keep the conversation private.
