Chicago Bears DT Henry Melton mentioned that he’s “optimistic” that he and the Bears will be able to reach an agreement on a long-term contract extension before the start of free agency. “We were talking during the season,” said Melton while appearing on the “The Waddle and Silvy Show,” via ESPN Chicago. “I expressed my interest in coming back and staying here. We didn’t get anything done. All the coaching changes and all that have delayed it. Hopefully we can get back on schedule of getting something done.” “We were getting somewhere, but we couldn’t really come to a deal,” added Melton. “Hopefully we can get back on track, because I do want to stay in Chicago.” Melton, 26, is coming off of back-to-back solid seasons for the Bears. It’s not easy to find young interior pass rushers on the open market, so we’re admittedly very high Melton as he prepares for what figures to be a lucrative offseason for the former Longhorn. Chicago could also franchise Melton for $8.31 million and buy them some extra time negotiate a long-term deal. We have Melton listed as the No. 5 best available player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
