The Jacksonville Jaguars (3-8) saw their last loss under Head Coach Jack Del Rio Sunday. Jaguars’ Owner Wayne Weaver was quick to cut the coach at the tail end of his ninth season at the helm, leaving Del Rio with a 69-73 overall record with the squad since his hiring in 2003. A crushing 20-13 loss Sunday to the Houston Texans (8-3)–where backup QB Matt Leinart suffered a season ending injury and still helped his team beat the Jags–was the straw that broke Weaver’s back.
The best year in recent memory for Jaguars fans was 2007. The team compiled an 11-5 record that year and made the playoffs as a wild card. The next season they pulled a complete 180 and ended the season with a 5-11 record. That was the last time Del Rio came close to losing his job. Del Rio was just 1-2 with his team in the post-season, and the Jaguars never won the AFC South during his time as their coach. Before the 2011 season the ultimatum from management for the coach was win or go home. Weaver made it clear that Del Rio would not see his 10th season with the team if the Jaguars did not make the post-season this year. The loss to the Texans put the team out of the playoff hunt and sent the long time coach packing.
Interim Coach Mel Tucker will be promoted from defensive coordinator to replace Del Rio. He’ll have just enough time to audition for keeping the position. Tucker’s been with the team since 2009 and served four seasons as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns before that.
The Jaguars called off practice Tuesday out of respect for the deposed coach and to allow a pause before the transition of leadership.
Del Rio may land with another NFL team next season or could certainly make a move to the college circuit. The firing might be just the kind of spark the team needs right now with ticket sales lagging and a Monday Night Football appearance coming up next week against San Diego.
BEST OF MAXIM
Considering the Jacksonville Jaguars have not finished with a record above .500 since 2007 and are one of the NFL’s worst teams this year, it should come as no surprise that Jack Del Rio was fired this week. The news has been accompanied by plenty of buzz, however, likely because Del Rio has been the [...]
