Sorry to break this to you folks, but I bet you this happens a lot more than you think. While it might not seem like such a big deal to those of us who cruise the streets in our ’87 Chrysler LeBaron, it’s definitely a bit disconcerting to people like Colts WR Reggie Wayne, who just so happens to own a pretty sweet 2007 Bentley.
According to The Indy Channel, Wayne checked his ride in with the valet services at the Westin Hotel around 6:30 p.m. Saturday night, but when he went to check it out the next morning, the car was nowhere to be found. Indianapolis police allege that 21-year-old Gunner Belcher (pictured here), a valet employee at the hotel, took the car on a drunken joyride from about 9:00 p.m. until he was pulled over by the cops on suspicion of drunk driving at roughly 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
More from The Indy Channel…
A check of police reports found that Gunner Belcher, 21, a valet at the hotel, had been pulled over on suspicion of drunken driving near 300 S. Meridian St. just after 2 a.m. while driving a Bentley.
According to a police report, Belcher was stopped in the street, blocking traffic, and smelled of alcohol, with glassy eyes and slurred speech.
His blood-alcohol level registered at 0.13 percent, police said.
Belcher told police that the car belonged to Wayne, but he said he was Wayne’s cousin by marriage.
Belcher was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, failure to carry registration and failure to wear his seat belt.
Cousin by marriage? That’s actually not a bad story, if you’re driving the aforementioned LeBaron. Not so much when you’re all liquored up behind the wheel of a Bentley and you look like Gunner Belcher.
Wayne was able to get his car back on Sunday after police confirmed that it did belong to the Indy receiver.
