Former Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd says he smoked marijuana and distributed it to teammates during his five seasons with the Cowboys. According to a story Sports Illustrated released on its website Tuesday, Hurd admitted to smoking high-grade California marijuana for the last three or four years of his NFL career, “all day, every day, and I didn’t want to hear anyone trying to tell me I had a problem.” The San Antonio Brackenridge graduate is expected to be sentenced to life in prison in Federal court on Wednesday in Dallas for drug trafficking. Hurd played for the Cowboys from 2006 through 2010, when he signed in free agency with Chicago. Heard told SI that most of the marijuana he had shipped in from California he smoked with himself or shared at cost with friends, including 20 to 25 teammates spanning his five seasons with the Cowboys. “Whatever was considered the loudest weed in California—I wanted a notch above that,” Hurd told Sports Illustrated from a prison interview room in Seagoville. “I had educated myself on different strains and potencies and growing techniques. I was very selective. It was like wine.” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is expected to address Hurd’s allegations about marijuana use among the Cowboys at his news conference at team headquarters Tuesday morning.
