Having the top-ranked statistical defense last season is something that Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor always likes to bring up when he talks to the media, and he did just that on Wednesday. "We keep trying to go from No. 1 defense to zero," Taylor said, according to Will Graves of the Associated Press. "I don't know if you can go from one to zero, but I guess we're trying to go to zero." While having the top-ranked defense last season is all fine and good, the Steelers still managed to finish with an 8-8 record. Whether or not Taylor wants to hear it, the Steelers defense simply didn't help out the offense enough last year as they only produced 37 sacks and 20 total turnovers. If they don't want to go 8-8 this season, those are the rankings that need to start moving closer to zero. During the preseason, the Steelers defense registered 13 sacks and seven total turnovers, but it is hard to put too much stock into exhibition game stats. T...

Dick LeBeau Says He Doesn’t Have Many Defenses For Troy Polamalu In His Playbook

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu appears to be the healthiest he's been in several seasons, and the team will need him to remain that way in 2013 if they expect to make a run at a seventh Lombardi Trophy. With that being said, defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau said Thursday during his talk with the media that just because Polamalu is in the lineup, it doesn't mean...

A Look Ahead At The Steelers Potential Free Agents In 2014

The Pittsburgh Steelers will kickoff their 2013 season Sunday at Heinz Field and unless any players receive contract extensions between now and then, the team will have 19 free agents at the end of season assuming all are still on the 53 man roster by then. Below is a quick recap of the players that are entering their final year under contract and schedule to be free agents in 2014...

Steelers DE Cameron Heyward To Be Featured In Sub Packages This Year

The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted defensive end Cameron Heyward in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft and with this now being his third season, he is expected to play a lot more than he has in his first two seasons. Head coach Mike Tomlin talked about the Ohio State product Tuesday during his press conference. "We feel very good about Cam Heyward," said Tomlin. "We...

Pittsburgh Steelers: What does the future hold?

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu entering the field (photo credit: Charles LeClaire/USA Today Sports) The Pittsburgh Steelers begin their season this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. The preseason was very disappointing for the Steelers so it’s not much of a stretch to say that the same is to be said for the regular season. This season is poised to be a long and hard...

The Steelers missed the playoffs last season. That cannot happen again, can it? Week 1 picks.

The Steelers did something that doesn't happen often in Pittsburgh, they missed the playoffs.  They've made some changes on offense, will they be enough to move forward? After postings a record of 164-92 last season, I'm ready to breakthrough to 70% this season. We've started off on the right foot by getting the Broncos game right. Here's a look...

Late-blossoming Clark honored by captaincy

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark never wanted to be a captain. When his teammates failed to name him one during his collegiate career at LSU, Clark says he was relieved. Still, Clark didn't turn the honor down when the Steelers named him one of four captains for the 2013 season. The 11-year veteran called it a ''blessing'' and feels he's at the point...

The Story Of Guy Whimper

By Matthew Marczi With a few days now gone by since the final 53-man roster was first tallied and the Pittsburgh Steelers seemingly done making roster moves, it certainly appears that journeyman offensive lineman Guy Whimper is here to stay, at least for now. So what exactly does that mean for the 2013 season? As it currently stands, it should mean virtually nothing, barring injury...

Loss Of Will Johnson Could Result In More 12 Personnel Groupings Against Titans

The season is not getting off to a good start for Pittsburgh Steelers fullback Will Johnson, who will more than likely sit out the Sunday season opener at Heinz Field against the Tennessee Titans with a hamstring injury that he suffered in the preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers. With Will Johnson likely to be sidelined, the Steelers might very well use a fullback by committee...

Titans-Steelers Preview

Following their 8-8 finish last season, Ben Roethlisberger figures to have his work cut out for him as he attempts to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers back to the playoffs. Without a go-to workhorse in the backfield and possibly two of his top receivers from 2012, Roethlisberger will try to help the Steelers win their 11th straight home opener Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. While...
