Insider helps unveil the truth on why the Steelers may be done with Najee Harris
Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

When the Pittsburgh Steelers declined Najee Harris' fifth-year option minutes before last week's deadline, there was a sense of shock throughout the fanbase and Pittsburgh media.

Whether or not you thought it was the right or wrong decision, the consensus belief was that Pittsburgh would pick up the $6.79 million tab for his 2025 season.

Instead, the team threw a curveball by declining Harris' option, leaving many to ponder, and others to report on why it may have happened.

Najee On Notice?

"I mean he’s [Najee Harris a very unique character. He’s hard to get a read on. Sometimes he’s cranky and sometimes he’s talkative. My biggest concern right now is which one are you going to get during the regular season here… is he going to be sitting and moaning and complaining behind the scenes… I’m not quite sure right now because he’s a very intriguing individual that can go either way at this point,” The Athletic's Mark Kaboly said during a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan...

"...(Tomlin) still talks glowingly of him. You see the interactions and the behind-the-scenes stuff. I don’t know if it has changed to that point at least publicly or at least where we can see it here. I think it’s a big deal for Najee to get that C ripped off him last year. He wants to be a leader and at least tries to be a leader."

Unlike some of the other players on Pittsburgh's offense last year, Harris, or at least to my understanding, has never been a "character" problem for the Steelers. A hard worker who just wants to win, it's his passion that gets him in trouble.

Kaboly makes a fantastic point about Najee losing his captaincy from 2022 to 2023 when the team opted to give the offensive title to QB Kenny Pickett.

I'm not saying that was the crux of his postgame reactions, but Harris was openly critical of the entire coaching staff, including Mike Tolin after losses.

It got to the point that by the end of the season, when Pittsburgh would lose, the team would cut Harris' media availability after games.

While Coach T wants players to be themselves, there is a line you don't cross.

And I'm not saying that Harris running hot and cold or calling out coaches is the reason he had his option declined.

But if you don't think it played a role in Pittsburgh's decision...

Think again.
