Todd Bowles, former Assistant and Interim Head Coach for the Miami Dolphins took a job as the Eagles defensive backs coach this offseason. Is he here to keep Juan Castillo from failing? Bashing Juan Castillo as defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles was en vogue last year, and you could say it was for good reason. I remember questioning the move when it was made. How do you take an offensive line coach and turn him into a defensive coordinator at the NFL level? That’s what happened, and the story is tired and well chronicled by now. One of the moves that for the casual Eagles fan may have flown under the radar this offseason was the hiring of defensive backs coach Todd Bowles. Bowles is a Temple University product who spent his playing days mostly with the Washington Redskins as a safety. Bowles was an assistant head coach and secondary coach with Miami Dolphins for 4 years, and when the Dolphins booted Tony Sparano last year, it was Bowles who was given the interim head coach job. Bowles also coached for the NY Jets, Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys. Bowles was also a defensive coordinator for Morehouse College and Grambling State. After watching the Eagles first defensive unit on Monday night, all the questions and concerns about the Eagles defense only intensified. The defense once again couldn’t stop third down plays, gave up big gains and committed stupid penalty after stupid penalty. Only after an Andy Reid/Cullen Jenkins shouting match on the sidelines early in the second quarter, did things finally settle down on D. Juan Castillo, former Offensive Line coach for the Eagles was made the Defensive Coordinator last year. I said after the Eagles first preseason game against Pittsburgh that the D looked strikingly similar to the way it looked early in the season last year – in other words, inept. There is a reason why the Philadelphia Eagles felt compelled to bring Todd Bowles, former NFL head coach (even if it was only interim) and a former Defensive coordinator (even if it was only college) into the fray. If Juan Castillo can’t make the adjustments necessary and get this very talented and underperforming defense going, I would not be shocked to find that Todd Bowles would be taking over as D Coordinator. It may never even be a move that we hear of or is made public. Bowles may never publicly get that title, but there is a reason he is here, and that reason, in my mind, is insurance if Juan Castillo fails again. After two bad preseason games, there may be a claim in on that insurance policy very soon. Similar Posts:

Is Nick Foles the Future for Eagles? History Suggests Otherwise

Elise Amedola / The Associated Press If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear that Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles was already a five-time pro-bowler and Super Bowl MVP. Fortunately, I know that he’s just a rookie who has attempted a mere 38 passes in two preseason games during his 15 day career as an Eagle. But wow, what a 38 pass attempts it has been! He has completed 24...

Nick Foles replaces injured Michael Vick leads team to victory

For the second straight preseason game Michael Vick was knocked out early, getting leveled on a deep pass play on his sixth play. X-rays were negative on Vick and he was diagnosed with bruised ribs. Vick passed for five yards and rushed for five. In came rookie Nick Foles who again was impressive throwing for two touchdowns and passing for over 200 yards. Foles threw both touchdown...

2012 Fantasy Football Preview: Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin

The Philadelphia Eagles’ Monday night game against the New England Patriots may have not meant much in terms of scoring, stats, etc. But for fantasy football owners, it was the first time we saw Jeremy Maclin suit up this preseason. After dealing with a hamstring injury, Maclin sat out of last week’s game against the Steelers as a precautionary measure. Maclin’s debut Monday...

21 NSFW Black Guys On Twitter Breaking Down Mike Vick’s Rib Injury

What did homeboys have to say about the Michael Vick rib injury? Plenty. Nothing gets a black dude in the ‘hood blasting NSFW tweets like a homeboy going down to a preseason shot. Seriously, is there any shot of this guy making it through a full NFL season ever again? Black guys on Twitter sure don’t think so, and one guy even compared what Vick is going through to slavery! ...

Philadelphia Eagles: 5 Impact Players vs. Patriots

Monday night was the second preseason game for Philadelphia and it was by all means their most important. Coach Reid planned on playing all the starters through the third quarter because next week the Eagles play their first opponent from the regular season and Reid doesn't want to show them anything.Obviously, things didn't go as planned when, once again, Vick went down...

Philadelphia Eagles: Michael Vick Injury Opens Door For Foles

Michael Vick: 4-for-7, 11 yards, 0 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 62.2 rating (12 offensive plays).Nick Foles: 24-of-38, 361 yards, 4 touchdowns, 1 interception, 118.4 rating (roughly an entire game played overall).Obviously, these numbers are a bit deceiving. Vick’s 12 plays of offense were stunted not by poor play, but a pair of injuries (jamming a throwing finger in one game;...

NFC East Preview

Remember when the Philadelphia Eagles were referred to as the “Dream Team”? It ended up being more like the “in your dreams, team”. They had an awful start to last season (1-4 through five games), and were unable to recover from it, even after gelling a bit more and winning their final four games. Some analysts felt the lockout affected the Eagles more than other teams, since...
