Tim Tebow is Kakfaesque. Sort of. Yes, the New England Patriots signing of Tebow Monday squeezed quarterback Mike Kafka out of the NFL. For one day. The Patriots released Kafka after signing him to a futures contract. And the team that most people Tebow would sign with, the Jacksonville Jaguars, are the franchise that picked up Mike Kafka. Which means Mike Kafka, a former Northwestern and St. Rita (Chicago) star is now fighting to be QB3 in Jax. This marks the fourth former Patriots player to be acquired by the Jaguars in recent weeks. Mike Kafka joins Kyle Love, Brandon Deaderick and Jeremy Ebert on Team Teal. Also of note, the Cowboys reportedly put a claim in for Kafka’s services as well. A ringing endorsement of the former Northwestern star, for sure. We leave you with this quote from the philosopher-author-thinker Franz Kafka: “If I shall exist eternally, how shall I exist tomorrow?” The correct answer, at least now, is “as a Jaguar backup quarterback.” Mike Kafka, 25, was originally a fourth-round draft pick (122nd overall) by the Philadelphia Eagles out of NU in 2011. He played in four games as a rookie, completing 11 of 16 passes for 107 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions. Kafka was released by the Eagles on Aug. 31, 2012, and spent last year not playing football. He did look decent in that Sunday Night game a couple years ago when he saw significant time relieving an injured Mike Vick. Mike Kafka is probably best remembered for the insane numbers he put up in the 2010 Outback Bowl vs Auburn. It was a very exciting, back-and-forth, pass happy overtime loss for Northwestern. The Tigers would go on to be college football champions the very next season. My favorite Kafka memory though is a soundbite from his college coach Pat Fitzgerald. Heading into the season finale versus Wisconsin, Fitz spoke about the battle for the Big Ten MVP award. Fitzgerald said the game would be a battle for who would get the Silver Football, and the two leading candidates were Mike Kafka and the Badgers John Clay, the league’s leading rusher. Kafka had 10 TD passes and 7 interceptions at the time. Must have been a really slow year for trophy candidates. Follow Mike Kafka on Twitter Paul M. Banks is the owner of The Sports Bank.net.
