It looks like the Jaguars may dip in the free agent pool again and come away with another solid veteran to shore up its defense. An ESPN. com story by Paul Kuharsky this week reported that former Green Bay Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop may be on the team’s radar in an effort to bring in another quality veteran for the middle of the defense. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft and played college football at California.Jacksonville is not the only team that has shown interest in Bishop, who was missed last season with a hamstring injury. The New York Giants, Minnesota and Kansas City Chiefs also appear to be suitors for his services. The Jaguars signed linebacker Geno Hayes of Chicago early in the free agent period to fill the slot left open by released linebacker Daryl Smith, who recently signed with Baltimore. If signed, Bishop, who is 6’2” and 233 pounds, could be in line to start for the team that needs help in stuffing the run. The Jaguars face both Arian Foster and Chris Johnson twice this season and will see Marshawn Lynch, Frank Gore and Rashard Mendenhall as well. Those types of runners go through and over defenses. The only question about Bishop coming to Jacksonville would be where would he play in the defensive scheme. While he has been used mainly as an inside player, the Jaguars may move him outside in their unit.Paul Posluszny currently mans the spot Bishop is used to playing. Posluszny is a tackling machine for the Jaguars. Russell Allen and Hayes will play on the outside. If Bishop signed, one of those players would move to a backup role for the team.
