In a day where touchdown dances have almost become more publicized than wins and losses (thanks ESPN), Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey has put down a wager to help curtail his team from celebrating.

Mularkey announced Sunday that for all Jaguars’ touchdowns in which the player hands the ball back to the referee instead of dancing, Mularkey will donate $250 to the Ronald McDonald House.  The team announced that it will match the donation and make it $500 total.  Mularkey said he started the program in Buffalo and decided to take it south with him.

“I thought how can I make sure our guys don’t do something ridiculous and do that and create a penalty that will really hurt our football team,” Mularkey told reporters on Sunday. “I just thought it’s a classy and professional way of doing things by handing the ball to the official by saying ‘Hey hang onto this. I’ll be back again’. I just thought that if a charity was rewarded every time they did it and now the team is going to match everything that is donated. It’s a win win win.”

One odd caveat in the system is that Cecil Shorts score the Jags’ first touchdown of the preseason Sunday.  The Jaguars mascot didn’t allow Shorts to comply with Mularkey’s rule and hand the ball to the ref.  So who’s paying the donation?  Mr. Mascot.

Although this an extremely generous and thoughtful idea on Mularkey’s part, his bank account will be thankful to know that the Jags were tied for the fourth-worst in points scored per game last year at 15.2.  On the other hand, the Ronald McDonald House can be thankful that Maurice Jones-Drew is no Barry Sanders.
