Jaguars Central:
Is Rashean Mathis playing his last season in Jacksonville?
As I was driving home from the Jaguars game on Sunday listening to the Jaguars post game show on the radio there appeared to be only one topic on the fans mind. No, it wasn’t the Jaguars amazing Hail Mary play, it was the expression of complete and utter displeasure with the play of cornerback Rashean Mathis.
Mathis, who has been a staple on the Jaguars defense since he was drafted in the second round of the 2003 NFL Draft, has noticeably declined over the past two seasons. The final straw broke on Sunday for Jaguars fans as they watched Houston Texans all-pro wide receiver Andre Johnson run wide open on several plays in which he was matched up against Mathis.
It is hard to know whether the breakdowns in pass coverage are due to Mathis no longer being able to cover NFL wide receivers, or if the young safeties playing behind him are blowing assignments. After most plays Mathis is seen yelling at one or both of the safeties...
