This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Literally. The New York Giants learned yesterday defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul underwent successful back surgery and will be out for 3 months and is doubtful to return for the Giants season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. The offseason for the New York Giants has not been as publicized because of their roommates the New York Jets and all of their hoopla. Yet, it should be noted because this offseason is worrisome if you are a New York Giants fan. The New York Giants are coming off a forgettable season, which saw them hit their 2nd half swoon and rebound too late and made them unable to qualify for the playoffs and defended their Super Bowl title. Now looking into this season, the Giants have been more focused on locking up Victor Cruz and now with Hakeem Nicks skipping voluntary workouts and ticking off Tom Coughlin in the process, this season doesn’t show much promise. Granted, you still have Eli Manning who is just getting better and better every season. The Giants young players like David Wilson and Rueben Randle started to show their potential late in the season so there is a bright outlook in that regard. Yet, when you look at the curious case of Victor Cruz and the back and forth battle in negotiations headlining anything Giants related and now Nicks’ inability to work out for fear of injuring himself and hurting his stock when he becomes an unrestricted free agent, questions of loyalty start to sprout. And from these speculations arise revelations. Looking at the acquisitions by the New York Giants, they really did not sign any veteran players. just their draft picks: offensive tackle Justin Pugh, defensive tackle Jonathan Hankins, and defensive end Damontre Moore). Excluding Ryan Nassib for now, there is a lot of unknowns with these signings, but the Giants are pros at finding something extraordinary in the ordinary. Just ask Victor Cruz. Aside from those three rookies, no veteran talent was brought because of the Giants constraints with trying to negotiate with Cruz and keeping money available for Nicks. Therefore, the 2013 New York Giants team will be a very young team. But Paul’s injury shows us the chinks in the armor. The injury shows that the Giants rely heavily on veteran talent and if veteran talent is what they need, veteran talent they did not get. Nothing has changed in the secondary unit. The Giants did not get a linebacker which they desperately need and lastly, Osi Umenyiora signed with the Atlanta Falcons and Paul may not start in the opener and will likely not be the same when he returns. Too much pressure to re-sign Cruz and keep Nicks content so he may re-sign next year could likely be why the Giants falter this season. Paul’s injury should serve as a wake-up call to the Giants. Get help for this season otherwise you will have other tragedies and disappointments looming in the very near future.
